Orthopedic care

Orthopedists are doctors who take care of the entire musculoskeletal system. They diagnose and treat conditions such sprains, strains, broken bones, arthritis and osteoporosis. Some of the treatments they offer include recommending lifestyle changes, applying casts and performing surgeries, such as ligament repairs or total joint replacements.

Orthopedic services we offer

Our treatments and services include:

Joint replacement surgery

If your doctor recommends a joint replacement procedure, we will be there for you from surgery preparation to recovery to make sure you receive the care you need. Types of joint replacement surgery we offer include:

Knee replacement

During knee replacement surgery, orthopedic surgeons replace the kneecap with a prosthetic (artificial) implant. When possible, we use minimally invasive techniques to reduce the amount of time you spend in the hospital.

Hip replacement

Anterior hip replacement is a minimally invasive approach to hip replacement surgery in which your surgeon performs the procedure with smaller incisions and specialized instruments. This approach allows your surgeon to access the hip between two muscles, rather than by removing and then reattaching a muscle.

With anterior hip replacement, the surgery is much less aggressive, allowing you to start rehabilitation sooner. In the past, patients who had hip replacement surgery stayed in bed for at least a few days after surgery. Now, you are able to begin rehabilitation therapy on the same day as surgery.

Starting rehabilitation earlier helps prevent complications, such as urinary infections, blood clots and skin ulcers.

Robot-assisted joint replacement surgery

Robotic procedures allow our surgeons to perform joint replacement surgery with even more accuracy, flexibility and control. We will work with you to determine if you are a candidate for this type of surgery.

If it is a good fit for you, our orthopedic surgeons will create a personalized plan for your joint replacement procedure. Prior to surgery, we will create a 3D model of your joint. This 3D model will be used to plan the most precise surgical route.

We offer robotic surgery as an option for hip and knee replacements.

When to see a doctor for back pain

Although many sources of back pain can be treated at home, back pain that is constant or severe may need advanced care from an orthopedic doctor.

You may need to seek orthopedic care if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Back pain when standing, walking or lying down
  • Difficulty or inability to carry weight
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Intense pain or burning in the back
  • Reduced range of motion in the back
  • Sudden swelling on or near your spine
  • Signs of infection, such as fever, chills or redness, accompanied by back pain

Orthopedic and spine patient navigator

We understand orthopedic surgery requires a lot of planning and support. That's why we have an orthopedic and spine patient navigator to help you and your family navigate the entire journey. Your navigator will:

  • Provide education on what to expect before, during and after surgery
  • Give you a tour of the Orthopedic and Spine Institute
  • Meet with you while you are in the hospital and provide support
  • Work closely with your surgeon, nurses, therapists and case manager to assist you with your recovery

Orthopedic rehabilitation

We are proud to offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs and state-of-the-art rehabilitation facilities. We are here to help, whether you have a sports-related injury or need help recovering from surgery.

You will be fully evaluated by a therapist, and we will create an individualized treatment plan for you. Programs are designed to help you achieve your highest possible level of function after an injury, illness or surgery.

The following are some of the services offered through our rehabilitation programs:

Aquatic therapy

During aquatic therapy, you will perform a series of exercises and stretches underwater. A certified aquatic therapist will oversee all aquatic therapy and will sometimes suggest a heated therapy pool. Aquatic therapy provides additional resistance and reduces the amount of stress on your joints as you regain movement and strength.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy addresses the physical, cognitive and mental challenges accompanying an injury or condition. Our occupational therapists also identify difficulties in the ability to perform self-care, home management and activities outside the home. The ultimate goal is to help you return to your daily activities as independently and fully as possible.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy is aimed at restoring strength and movement to an affected area of the body. It can also help restore proper walking and balance.

What to expect during rehabilitation

Our physical therapy and rehabilitation team will be there for you throughout every step of your recovery process. Depending on your needs, we will be there to help you:

  • Improve circulation through massage, temperature pads or new exercises
  • Learn new ways to stretch and care for your body
  • Rebuild muscles and body strength to help increase mobility
  • Regain or improve balance and coordination
